Dit alles gesê, ten minste raak dinge nou ten einde laaste bietjie meer besig wanneer dit kom by volgende jaar se skouspel…

Meet SA 2010′s Zakumi

Meet SA 2010′s Zakumi

The official mascot for the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, Zakumi will make his appearance at Times Square during the biggest SA 2010 Expo in Hong Kong between 10-13 December 2009.  If you cannot wait until then, just pop in at the South African Consulate in the Great Eagle Building, Wan Chai and you’ll find him in the lobby!

Zakumi can be found at the SA Consulate in Hong Kong (Pic: Mike Jansen)

This is what the GCIS (SA Govt. Information Service) had to say about the fluffy “little” mascot:

So what can we say about him? One thing is for sure, Zakumi will be first on the dance-floor and last off it at the biggest party in the world – the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. He wants to dance and entertain as many people as he can. He is an animator for fans, players and officials, for schoolchildren, teenagers and big kids alike!

Needless to say, he is extremely proud to be the Official Mascot and determined to be the best host for everyone visiting his beloved country. He symbolizes South Africa and the rest of the African continent through his self-confidence, pride, hospitality, social skills and warm-heartedness.

Zakumi is a jolly, self-confident, adventurous, spontaneous, and actually quite shrewd little fellow. He loves to perform and always follows his instinct and intuition, yet sometimes has the tendency to exaggerate a bit. You will often find him fooling about and teasing people but not in a mean way. He is warm-hearted and caring, and wants to make as many friends as possible.

He loves to play football as it is a great way to connect with others and break down language barriers. He always carries his football around which he will use to invite people to play with him.

Zakumi loves football. At one time he decided to dye his hair green as he felt it would be the perfect camouflage against the green of the football pitch; a bit like his rosette spots are when hunting in the wilderness!

He does have one striking weakness. With all his energy, he needs frequent rests. Occasionally, in-between performances on stage, he may suddenly fall asleep on the spot at the most random times! But rest assured, these are only short breaks that a leopard of his calibre needs to recharge his batteries.

Over the last years he has travelled the whole of Africa where the leopard habitat is good (pretty much everywhere from open savannahs, forests, jungles to mountainous areas, even deserts). He has therefore learned to adapt to new environments; enjoying the diversity in nature and people across the African continent

The name ‘Zakumi‘ is a composition of ‘ZA’ standing for South Africa and ‘kumi’, which translates translates into ‘10′ in various languages across Africa.

Zakumi‘s main priority is to turn the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa into one huge, joyful and unforgettable party and show the thousands of international guests the warmth and spirit of the African continent.

“He wants to create a good mood for the fans and raise the excitement for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the first on African soil. He is a proud South African and wants to ensure that the world will come together in South Africa,” explained Lucas Radebe, South Africa’s football icon and close friend of Zakumi.

Boktown Delaneys!

Boktown Delaneys!

Hong Kong, Sunday November 29, 2009

The Springboks ended their long 2009 rugby season last night by going down to a spirited Ireland at, what looked like a freezing Croke Park.

At Delaney’s Irish Bar in Wan Chai last night, it was anything but freezing.  What was going to be a table booked for six, turned out to be a bar full of equally spirited Saffas.  I think it’s time for BokTown Hong Kong to be officially constituted!

Delaney’s has always been a lekka hang-out to watch the Springboks play and I hope we can continue this ‘tradition’ into the new season.  Cheers to managers Clare, Pasi and David and their friendly staff for always being so welcoming to Saffas.  Congratulations on a good Irish performance to Adam, the only real Irish barman in WanChai!

Thanks to everyone who turned up!  Last night we had Wilson toffees… biltong next time around?

Cape Town welcomes the world in 2010!

Cape Town welcomes the world in 2010!

Mike Jansen (Hong Kong SAR, China November 28, 2009)

Many moons ago, I lined up for the 4x100m relay final at the Champions of Champions athletics meet of the Western Province Senior Schools Sport Union (WPSSSU), an affiliate of the non-racial South African Council on Sport (SACOS) at the (then) Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town.  Getting to that point was a hard slog and the culmination of many an afternoon training on the concrete-hard playground at the back of Gordon High School in Somerset West.

But it was a feeling that I would treasure to this day.  Picture this: the corner of the Greenpoint Stadium occupied by my school, in the windy late afternoon when all the finals were held, delerious with excitement.  The goosebumps too numerous to count and only one thing on your mind: don’t drop the baton.

We won that race.  Maybe it was because my team was anchored by the reigning Western Province & SA Schools sprint champion; a fantastic, natural sprinter called Lionel Williams, known to his friends as ”Bep.”  Who knows. I always started the race.

Years later, and I’m back at the Greenpoint Stadium.  As the sports-master of a high school in the Helderberg, I had the honour of being the chief organiser and convener of the very last Champions of Champions meeting ever to be held under the auspices of the WPSSSU.  It was the end of apartheid rule and democracy was coming to South Africa.  All sports organisations were amalgamating under a single non-racial organising body.

I still have a couple of copies of the cover of my Official Programme from that day.  I remember fondly that it featured the images of covers of all the Official Programmes for the previous Champions of Champions held under the WPSSSU banner.  Needless to say that was a singular event in my career as a sports administrator.

Fast forward another couple of years, and I’m working for the sports department of the local city government.  This time around helping to prepare the Greenpoint Stadium for the King of Pop: Michael Jackson.

While living in Asia, I have always made it my duty to follow the goings-on at the Greenpoint Stadium via the internet and when visiting home once a year.  At one stage, the Stadium went through a period of rapid decline and I expected the worst.  Until FIFA President Sepp Blatter pulled out South Africa’s name from his envelope.

You’ll forgive me if I feel just a little proud after seeing these pictures of the true Champion of Champions

the brand-new Greenpoint Stadium.

Lionel Williams will not have the joy of experiencing this newest landmark on the Cape Town landscape.  He was unfortunately murdered in a random act of violence before he could graduate.  However… like me, I’d like to think that for Bep, seeing these pictures of our Greenpoint Stadium…

Brings back the goosebumbs of old.

SA women promoting business in Hong Kong

SA women promoting business in Hong Kong

In May 2008 a number of dynamic expatriate South African ladies got together at the South African Consulate in Hong Kong.  Among the issues that were discussed on the day was a general interest by some of the ladies to assist with the exchange of internees from South African universities and companies to work in Hong Kong.

One thing led to another and after much planning and meetings, the Consulate sponsored two business-women who travelled to South Africa where they spoke to universities as well as companies about what was proposed for the development of successful young South African and Chinese business people and entrepreneurs.

The ladies futher decided to house this project independent of, but with the full support of the Consulate.  This led to the establishment of the fully constituted South African Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Hong Kong  (SAWCC of HK) by the founding members Lizette Smook, Tembi Tambo and Charmaine Kleu.

The South African Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Hong KongSAWCCHKlogo

In short, the SAWCC of HK aims to promote sound relations with business, government and other relevant organisations in Hong Kong and to promote trade, tourism and investment between South Africa and Hong Kong.

Various community-building events for the broader South African community in Hong Kong are also being planned.  More details will of course be published right here on Howzit-HongKong.

During a recent meeting at the Consulate, Ms Tambo reiterated her belief that there are many South Africans living in Hong Kong who share the vision of the Chamber and who have specific skills that can be used to the benefit of the Chamber.  For this reason, she would like to invite anyone interested in joining the SAWCC of HK to contact Lizette Smook to learn more or to find out when the next meeting will be held. Lizette can be reached via e-mail on:

lizette(dot)smook(at)gmail(dot)com

The SAWCC of HK has different levels of membership so do contact Lizette to find out which one is best for you or your company.  Best of all, in addition to the excellent networking opportunities, membership of the SAWCC of HK comes with a host of benefits.  There are so many that it’s impossible to list them all here.  Expect though, to find:

* Facial vouchers worth at least HK$1000

* Conrad Hotel discount vouchers

* discount on California Fitness membership

* Numerous restaurant discount vouchers, etc.

Mgoi Hong Kong… next stop Singapore!

Mgoi Hong Kong… next stop Singapore!

When I reported in an earlier article that the boats taking part in the inaugural Extreme Sailing Series Asia will be packed up and shipped off to the next leg in Singapore “soon after” the Hong Kong leg, I didn’t realise just how “soon” it would be!

I watched in awe as skipper and double Olympic Gold Medalist Shirley Robertson and her crew prepare and load their craft Rumbo Almeira onto it’s trailer immediately after finishing the final race of the Hong Kong leg of the Series on Tuesday afternoon.  The boat was lowered onto it’s trailer within minutes after the final race concluded in Victoria Harbour.

The teams had just enough time for a quick post-race debriefing before attending the official prize-giving at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

The Extreme Sailing Series Asia now moves on to Singapore for the second leg (December 11-15) before the inaugural series concludes in Muscat , Oman , from February 1-5.

Masirah wins inaugural Extreme Sailing Series title

Masirah wins inaugural Extreme Sailing Series title

Oman Sail’s Masirah continued their winning form by taking a comfortable overall victory in the first leg of the inaugural Extreme Sailing Series Asia in Hong Kong that concluded yesterday afternoon.

The Extreme 40s were here in Hong Kong to demonstrate the potential of bringing a full scale public event to the region in 2010/2011 – a chance to showcase the specatacle of Extreme 40 racing to the national and international media and VIP guests.  Organisers OC Events last night were confident that the Series will return to Hong Kong next year with about twelve boats.

The champions of this year’s European Series, skippered by Pete Cumming of Great Britain , consolidated their overnight lead by winning the first three races today to set them on the way to victory over the 20 races held in Hong Kong’s spectacular Victoria Harbour during the last five days.

BT took second place, followed by the China Team and Shirley Robertson’s Rumbo Almeira. The Wave, Muscat and Red Bull Extreme Sailing Team rounded out the six-boat field.

Said Cumming: “We had very different winds here to the European circuit and with two new members of the team we are really pleased to have done so well. We had to learn to adapt to a new bow and helmsmen and it’s been a great challenge that the whole team has risen to. We came here not looking for or expecting a win, just gave it our best. Bring on Singapore .”
